New proposals for the standardisation of Moroccan Arabic writing: The Little Prince, a dictionary of definitions in Moroccan Arabic, a diary, and the New Testament

Abstract
Moroccan Arabic has no official status and is regarded as a dialect. Since its orthography had not been standardized, today there exist various ways of writing in it: either in Arabic script (most of the time), or in Latin or Latin-numerical script. In this article, I present four proposals of standardizing Moroccan Arabic orthography based on four independent pieces written in Moroccan Arabic: the translation of The Little Prince, a Moroccan Arabic dictionary of definitions, a diary, and The New Testament. While the former two are closer to Standard Arabic, the latter two are influenced by the pronunciation of the varieties in which they were written. Further, while the former two follow the principle of ‘donor-orientation’, the latter two abide by the principle of ‘donation-defying’ (Michalski 2019). Building my analysis on these two trends of writing in Moroccan Arabic, I will try to suggest which one would be more useful for possible future standardization.
